What you'll learn

Earn national certification with this Direct Support Professional (DSP) I microcredential! In Otsego County and throughout New York, there is a growing need for specially trained DSPs to work with people who have intellectual or developmental disabilities. This is the first in a two-microcredential series. Upon completion, you will be able to: demonstrate knowledge and skills related to ethical practice in working with individuals and their families; outline the procedures for preventing and reporting abuse and neglect; understand and apply appropriate strategies for crisis intervention and prevention; demonstrate the skills and strategies for developing service plans and documenting such plans; and explain the strategies for promoting client emotional and physical well-being. Thanks to a partnership with the NYS Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), limited time grant funding is available to pay for your tuition, fees, books, course materials, NADSP credentialing, and educational support. Eligible students who successfully complete each microcredential and certification can earn $750 stipends. Successful completion of this microcredential prepares you for continued study and prepares current DSPs for advancement.
